Small family winery now headed up by the young third generation winemaker, whose funky labels with Japanese calligraphy are easy to recognise. The Wakao family have one of the longest histories of grape-growing in Japan and also run an adjoining pick-your-own-grapes stand for their table grapes, which is fun if you have children (and equally fun if you don’t). It was Kangoro Wakao, the local postmaster as well as grape-grower, who first introduced the use of wire for the grape canopies in 1898, inspired by telegraph wires.
